RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
